Burnout Isn't Always a Motivation Problem. Sometimes It's Your Nervous System.

If you're someone who gets more done in a week than most people accomplish in a month, but then crashes so hard you can't get off the couch, this might be for you.

For years, I thought my burnout was a character flaw.

I would have a few good days where my energy came back, my mind was clear, my creativity exploded, and I'd try to make up for everything I'd missed. I'd work twelve-hour days. I'd answer every email. Build new programs. Record videos. Write. Create. Dream.

Then my body would pull the emergency brake.

The fatigue would return. The pain would increase. The brain fog would settle in. I'd wonder what I had done wrong.

Living with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), along with dysautonomia and other chronic health challenges, has forced me to see something I wish someone had taught me years ago.

Burnout isn't always about stress. Sometimes it's about physiology.

Your Nervous System Has a Job

Your nervous system is constantly asking one question: Am I safe enough to keep going?

It regulates your heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, breathing, muscle tension, immune function, hormone production, sleep, and energy. It decides where your body's resources should be directed.

When you're under chronic stress — whether that's emotional stress, physical pain, illness, lack of sleep, or simply pushing beyond your body's capacity — your nervous system shifts into survival mode.

Survival mode is incredibly useful when you need to escape danger. It's much less helpful when you stay there for weeks, months, or years.

Eventually your body starts conserving energy. Your focus changes. Recovery slows. Everything feels harder.

For people with connective tissue disorders like mine, this balancing act can become even more delicate because our autonomic nervous systems often have to work much harder just to accomplish everyday tasks.

The High Achiever's Trap

One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that feeling better doesn't always mean I have more capacity. Sometimes it simply means I've accumulated enough energy to spend. And because I love what I do, I spend all of it.

Many entrepreneurs are wired this way. We're creative. We're driven. We see possibilities everywhere. When inspiration strikes, we sprint. Then we wonder why we crash.

The irony is that the very qualities that help us build businesses can also become the reason we burn out. We mistake a temporary increase in energy for unlimited energy.

What Daily Practice Has Taught Me

People often ask me why I practice Polistic Yoga every single day. Some days my practice lasts thirty minutes. Some days it's only a few minutes. The important part isn't perfection. It's consistency.

That daily practice has become a conversation with my nervous system. Every day I'm reminding my body:

You are safe.

You don't have to earn rest.

Movement doesn't have to be intense to be valuable.

Recovery is productive. Small moments matter.

The slow breathing, gentle stretching, supported positions, and intentional pauses help shift me out of constant "go" mode and back toward regulation. It's become less about exercise and more about communication.

Pacing Isn't Giving Up

For a long time, I believed pacing meant lowering my expectations. Now I see it differently. Pacing allows me to keep showing up.

Instead of emptying my battery on good days, I'm learning to leave something in reserve for tomorrow. Instead of waiting until I'm overwhelmed to rest, I'm practicing recovery before my body demands it.

This has probably been the biggest mindset shift of my entrepreneurial journey.

Rest isn't the opposite of productivity. It's part of productivity.

Why I Created a Daily Practice

I didn't create Polistic Yoga because everyone needs another workout. I created it because I needed a daily interruption. A small pause that reminded my nervous system it didn't have to stay on high alert.

A few intentional minutes can completely change the trajectory of a day. Not because it magically removes stress — because it teaches your body how to return to balance before burnout takes over.

If You're Reading This

If you've been wondering why you alternate between incredible productivity and complete exhaustion... if you feel guilty for resting... if you think your body is somehow failing you...

Maybe the answer isn't that you're lazy. Maybe your nervous system has simply been working harder than you realized.

I'm still learning this lesson. Living with hEDS means my body has cycles. Some days are easier than others. Fighting those cycles only leaves me further behind. Working with them has made me a better entrepreneur, a better teacher, and a healthier human being.

The goal isn't to do less. The goal is to build a life where your nervous system doesn't have to recover from the way you're living it.
